Complex states, and such
I am not certain, but it does seem like we have been dealing with " complex " states, ever since the lightbulb, telephone and radio. The lightbulb ,of course, made it a bit more difficult for us to distinguish nighttime from daytime, then the telephone made it possible for us to talk to people a long distance away, which seems somewhat difficult on its face, and likewise with the radio, which allowed us to sort of eavesdrop on events, again, from long distances away. Some might think of these states as imaginary or maybe virtual states.
Now, of course there is another type of state, like, for example, the state of Wisconsin, or Chiapas, etc., and of course with complex states springing up all around us, we have to think of states of that type as probably getting a bit more complex. Just ask somebody who may be employed by one of these states about how long it might take them to figure out , what exactly is going on, and you might find some folks who retire before that actually happens.
So, as sad or difficult or impossible as this might seem, dealing with complexity has now, in this age of miraculous complexity, become kind of a survival skill. I am not sure how encouraging I can be, but over all, as far as survival is concerned, humans tend to be pretty good at that. Nevertheless, we have to face issues, such as, how can an imaginary number be real?, and other questions of this sort.
I wish I could be more re-assuring, but at the end of the day, it will most likely be, the end of the day.
