Skill, art, victory, and loss

And so, skill is often mentioned in Buddhist literature, and a key element in art.  Of course, some folks are more skillful than others.  Sometimes you can recognize a skillful person , 'cause they have skill saws, and of course, many of those are carpenters.  But a little reflection indicates very little skill is achieved without practice, and a lot of practice includes set backs, errors and mistakes. One element of art, includes this notion of triumph, because what we often recognize as art is some skills were practiced and excelled and so the  result is some significant achievement.   These days, it may seem, we are experiencing a good deal of loss.  This might suggest that what we are practicing needs some improvements or even some types of refinement and even re-thinking.  It has been said before, that often the best way forward is to go around the wall, rather than trying to go through it.   Is this a collective or an individ...

Security

So lumping a bunch of words together: peace, justice, compassion, security, honesty, hope, liberty and democracy. Somehow, it should seem clear that all of these things are connected.  In fact there is not a lot of difference between these words.  They are often very easy to say, but often very difficult to understand, what  they are all about. Security, on some hand, has certainly (somewhat?) different implications. We often say that, we must invest in our security.  I would say simply that investing in that single attribute or potentiality is somewhat short sighted, as these attributes/potentialities  (how you want to think of them) are intimately connected.    We often say that we " lack " security because we feel threatened, or we have " evidence " in fact that we are threatened.  What about the lack of democracy or the lack of compassion or the lack of justice. We make " sizable " investments  to prevent feeling that particular thr...

An interesting perspective on history

It seems to me that often we view history from the point of view of " great " leaders.  An example would be Julius Caesar , but it is interesting to think that in any army, there are often many more privates and corporals than there are generals. With out all those corporals and privates, the generals would, I would think, appear a bit " silly " ? And that's not even to mention that all those folks probably needed boots of some kind. What does history really look like when viewed from the point of view of shoe makers? And it is also interesting to consider that any or almost all historical epochs or moments are in fact made up of all the efforts of those who are participating at various levels, like potters, gardeners, biscuit makers, and the vast numbers of people that go into creating our societies and cultures and structures.  For example did Michelangelo or Picasso  make their own paint brushes and where did  Shakespeare get his ink?  You would think s...
