Freedom and distance

Well, this could turn into a real mess considering this is Memorial Day, 2022. The word freedom is a very powerful word.  It is closely connected to the word - no - which also seems to have a fundamental and extremely powerful role in how we behave.   So, freedom suggests that we can perform some type of action or have some justification or ability to over ride some restriction. So when you think about this and it requires a considerable amount of reflection and effort to penetrate some of the meanings here.  Yet the word is often used as " arbitrarily " as the word -- no. Distance is actually I believe, another concept which is almost as difficult to comprehend, because it means things in a lot of different contexts, which has a lot of similarity to freedom. Also, like the notion of time, you end up with notions of " infinities " as well as questions like:  " is freedom free ? ". So what can I conclude.  I can certainly ask more questions, but it so...

More on, difficult times

As in the previous post I mentioned " difficult times ", I felt I needed to mention some phrase of a good friend, who often said " every bummer, is a bounty ".   His name is Fred Frazelle and I should mention he, I would say, saw some very difficult times as a combat medic.    He had another quirky turn of phrase where he mentioned  the Name of God, the fixer of flats,  I'm not sure about what letters are capitals or not .....

Voting, elections, and stuff

Many things are going on these days which are difficult to think about, or mostly comprehend.  I'm not sure how unusual this situation is, in the wider picture, but no doubt pretty  difficult. So, it seems a bit off maybe to focus on this issue of voting,  that is just where I am at, right now.   First consider a totalitarian state with a Dairy Queen.  How totalitarian we don't know, how Dairy Queen, we don't know. Now imagine a group of people traveling from say, A to B. Now, the Dairy Queen might be right on their route or just a little bit off.   Now, somebody asks, " who wants to stop at Dairy Queen ".   This is in fact an election or vote in a totalitarian state, which indicates that even in a totalitarian state some voting probably goes on as long a they have a Dairy Queen.    Now there are various important aspect of the scenario we can examine.  First we might think about motivation.  Why was the questi...

How to distinguish true and false

Lots of things must be true and you could say that for arbitrary things that lots of them would be false. So for an arbitrary thing, how would you know  exactly if it was true or false.    Well there are things you can do to know if a  particular thing is true and usually it does involve some kinds of actions.   Now it has been suggested that more success in that arena might involve the use of reason and thinking.  Very important capacity, but it is a capacity which always needs to be cultivated.   Finally, I should mention Norbert Wiener, and had some thoughts on this subject in  Human Use of Human Beings probrably as well as Cybernetics .

Justice and time

Seems like we should start with time, and so the most difficult issue with time, is the problem of infinity, and questions like what happened before there was time ? Back to justice, I am frequently concerned about the lack of awareness, that like generosity, courtesy, courage, honesty, and an on going list which may or may not be finite, justice is a virtue. Something that must be individually cultivated, because it is very beneficial to the  individual as well as those around them.   Of course the concern might not be valid, nevertheless it does concern me, and I think the primary reason for this is that, we have a variety of institutions connected to the notion of justice.   Therefore it is very easy for us all to view justice as something exterior, not something which we deal with and experience internally. Of course right now, as pretty much always, we are all very concerned  about a variety of issues related to what we think of as external just...

Donald Trump and atoms

In the early twentieth century Albert Einstein reasoned , based on the phenomena of Brownian motion, that , if there were fundamental elements in nature, they were not electrons.   Similar reasoning that would suggest, from the Brownian  like behavior of Donald Trump , generally, there must also be something like atoms in our political life and therefore wave form evolution must apply.

Mothers and education

Two very important realities. How important is education?  It is an extraordinary event for us to learn or know somethings which we had no idea about, before. And it does seem  that mothers are quite clearly the first educators. And for many or most, love is the first bit of knowledge that mothers are able to impart.  Could be the  most important lessons of our lives. But at the least it does give us some foundation and the ability to know more of such an important topic for us, today and most every day.

Greed, generosity, and electricity

Seems like I've forgotten something, but On greed and generosity, I could only guess that  more prefer a state/system ( or whatever )  associated with generosity than one associated with a state of greed.  With that said it does kind of seem that in general the greed stands out most of the time. Now, and I know it would be a stretch for me to connect this back to greed and generosity, but this whole notion of electricity has not been with us all that long ( as we currently think of it ) and yet in someways it always has been. I guess, if you go back in time over different epochs you might find that, the whole notion of what electricity actually may have changed significantly over time but always with us like generosity and greed.   Happy second day in May ...
