A personal reflection

The year of 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar, was really popular.  I was in San Antonio, Tx, and had just graduated from Medic Training at Fort Sam Houston, Tx, the same  Fort Sam Houston where Ike met Mammy.  A few days latter I would enroll in the Baha'i  Faith, something I had just learned about suddenly after having been transferred to Dental Training, which turned out to be an Army Fubar.  Anyway, it was March and so the midst of the fast.  Personally, I kind of think that was particularly poor planning, but remember, I never heard of the religion before, and therefore could have no ability to imagine what was happening.   A song from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar was popular on the radio, and very soon , very soon Summer Breeze, from Seals and Croft would head up the charts. Not too long after that, I would graduate from X-Ray Training, and then proceed to Colorado.  But, there were some quite " magical " days, with some deep in...

Something about structure

First of all, for certain, any kind of a collection which we use to describe reality, one clearly important aspect would be structure. So some examples. The door is a particularly common structure.  You must note that a door without a hinge, is not really a door.  It's usually more of an obstruction.  Another somewhat common  experience is when lightning hits a tree.  Very often the tree with loose some of its structure, and parts or perhaps all of the tree may fall.  And so we can see the notion of structure is quite pervasive in most of our experience. Curiously structure is un-defined in mathematics, or at least when I last had concerns about this.  It does kind of make sense because mathematics contains so many structures, as an example, the numbers can be viewed as a structure.   So, I must avoid making this tedious, therefore, in conclusion, no conclusion, but as per usual might have something to do with the proof of Poincare's C...

Inspiring aspects of work

Work is surely a curious human behavior, and does have more than one inspiring aspect, one in particular would be how universal it has been through time and of course even in the present, you can think of the near future as well.  Of course, we all do try to avoid it as much as possible, which when we are successful at that, usually ends up in more  work at a later time, but you know if you add that up throughout the planet, well, I guess it does kind of average out. But, it can be often more inspiring, especially when you reach a place , normally referred to as success.  This can be also a tremendous experience, and often quite beneficial, and many times the benefits are amazing.  I often think of this in terms of Learning Perl, Randall Schwartz, the preface by Larry Wall, when he talks about the creative process involved with Perl coming to be, and he talks about, " when it works ", and references this as some kind of magic. So, I might have to conclude, mag...

So now, what?

So kind of taking a brief tour of what's going on all over the place, i.e. , locally, regionally, nationally, and international scene, we can kind of sum in up by a bunch of people on a raft, heading down a river, with no idea of where they are, or even where they are going, or even able to control their speed, or able to stop.    And so, what is to be done ?  Well it's kind of hard to concern yourself with the " big picture ",  because mostly people are very anxious, concerned, frustrated and angry, mostly. Now, what would be a start is, for us to be able to get some clear picture of where we are. Well, then that involves for all of us to " see " clearly, regardless of our visual status, individually. And this clarity is clearly hard,  But you can look at it as almost a self healing situation, because, it's about our relationships with each other.  The only way we can see more clearly is in relation with each other.  And the best way we can dea...

Religion and superstition

So in discussing religion, I made a connection with religion and paths.  Superstition then can just be considered a path that basically goes nowhere. Now , it is very interesting that someone may  be very " diligent " , in the kinds of practices, he or she , might feel is religious and still engage or become involved with superstitions of various types.  You can definitely find examples of this, but it is simpler to just understand that religions, in order to have valid practice, generally requires more than one belief, and therefore, it is then possible to have a superstitious  belief, and other beliefs that  conflict with your genuine religious beliefs.  This is simply because to navigate any serious path, may require different types of practice and these practices will then be connected back to some belief about somethings. So, you can see, from that, how many people would choice to avoid belief.  But sadly belief is connected with actions, s...

Little bit on the Tree of Life

You know, it occurs to me to be a little bit odd that, biology has a Tree of Life, and I would assume one, but kind of a novice when it comes to biology, however, I do know that trees have leaves.  Also know that photo-synthesis is the most important biological process. Oddly , however, in a totally separate sconce, of computers or some say computer science, well, you got trees galore, which actually adds up to forests and even a.i.  Confusing a bit ?

More on - Religion

Religion is of course a very curious behavior.  Curious in that we have pretty much all, had it - , meaning ,throughout out history, and of course individually we've got it, in one form or another.  The other curious and interesting aspect of religion is, variety. But, it is kind of possible, to lump them all together, and you might find one thing that they all have in common is that religion represents or is most clearly expressed by, the notion of  a path.  So far example, in native American ( or  ? ) culture it is often referred to as the Great Red Road. You can see this somewhat in an other human behavior, which is frequently described as politics, and hence many people have some difficulty distinguishing politics and religion, which is never particularly good, because the destinations involved with some kind of political path, requires a some what more clear and succinct destination, while that destination involved in religion can generally be though...

Briefly on a.i.

So it's kind of hard to be too brief.  But, I've always felt that the term artificial intelligence was a poor choice of terminology for what a group of people, almost all at M.I.T. where actually doing in the 1950's. So what where they doing?  M.I.T. had built the biggest computer in the world back then, mostly with vacuum tubes, most of which where sent to Northern Minnesota.  So the folks there had lots of  equipment , and some of these guys decided to make a computer talk. Well, they were mostly unsuccessful with that, but, we do today have this type of technology.  ( Oddly ).  But the problem of course was that vacuum tubes, did not scale, the way those guys needed and of course it would take till the late '50s,  before transistor technology would so to speak, blossom.  Now when we reflect on that " blossoming ",  it's kind of gotten mind boggling at least for me, because I worked on a machine with 8k of memory, and etc., but the p...

Somewhat obtuse observation

So the obtuse part might suggest that this is something about politics, but I would let you make that observation. Anyway, I was going to do an epilogue for this blog, but can't do that, and anyway, it would require more work. So this goes back to Norbert Weiner and the Human use of Human Beings, in which he suggests that digital computing or control devices would likely have a somewhat less than beneficial effects on the kinds of life we humans call ourselves.  As a result, I might suggest that what  he had observed at the time, approximately 1950, has sort of manifested itself in a massive global issue, that you might call bi-polarism.   In other words, as a result of our use of such technology we have made ourselves susceptible to making lots of binary types of decisions.   Of course, this was particularly evident during the 1950's thru to almost 1990, when we viewed the globe as being divided between east and west. Nevertheless, as there is a mal...

Crazy and Normal

Oh, and now we have a fascinating combination of words.   Crazy, may mean mentally deranged or enthusiastic , or even extremely. Now of course, there is normal which I have spent the vast majority of my life studying as it applies to group theory, and which I probably get right about 50% of the time.    And my point would be, well, back to previous conclusion, no conclusion, I may or may not be capable of reaching a conclusion, but my guess  as per usual, probably has something to do with the proof of the Poincare Conjecture. However, I may suggest that issues of mental derangement are best left to medical professionals.

Addendum to previous post

And so, one interesting fact, which was pointed out by the Dali Lama, is that, on earth, we have about 8 billion, human brains, which are extremely uniform in nature, and therefore would suggest that human thought is pretty uniform, in many ways. And yet, tremendous diversity in it's uniformity.  Which goes back to unity in diversity. Maybe Yoda speak.

Briefly about science

I will try and make this as brief as possible, because stuff like this gets extremely tedious, rapidly. So we kind of have to start with Newton and Einstein, and what they were doing. Both observed the natural world and found amazing harmony.  Newton in particular was able to --- somehow --- comprehend that what was going on , on earth, was also going on in the " celestial " sphere, meaning areas beyond the local planetary. Well, of course, Einstein was very similar, only Einstein's world was somewhat more complicated, however, there had been a lot of investigation and progress, as well, between the time of those men, and so there was somewhat more understandings concerning this " harmonious " situation as regards to nature.   So briefly, Einstein extended this notion of uniformity  to what we might call the observable universe.  But, he did make some assumptions, mainly that the universe is effectively uniform, kind of following along with Newton, and th...

Intelligence, actions, and issues

First issues.  I may have some issues,  and whether or not that is true, I will not get into at this time. However, I probably should say, that in dealing with " issues ", intelligence may not always be the  best way to go. But, as far as intelligence and actions are concerned, as mentioned, previously, I lean heavily toward the side that intelligence can only be assessed by actions.  Mostly, we like to believe, and I would not like to discourage the idea, that intelligence or skill usually leads to better results, as far as actions are concerned.  But, then, are skill and intelligence the same thing ? So, this could go in lots of directions, but I should mention that there is some concern about machine intelligence, in various ways.  Well, that does go back to this issue of actions, and actions, whether skillful or intelligent, are, at the end of the day, what it is all about. I probably should throw in a word about reality, but not sure where that ...

Crime and business

Well, I suppose having never been to law school, that this would be a topic out side the level of my competency. What the heck, this is only an opinion. And so, it must be obvious that business and crime are two different things, unless of course you happen to be in the crime business, or that is none of your business. Either way, many or most people would like to think that crime and business are different, especially because most people - at least on some level, would like to think: crime does not pay.    Now, some people might suggest that " capitalism ", is inherently a crime, in  and of itself.  That would of course hinge upon the idea or notion of capitalism, that is to say what you mean by capitalism.  Now, to say that all economic systems are inherently criminal, would be stretching the meaning of criminal beyond recognition.  However, it seems fairly evident, as well, that some economic  systems may, in fact, be criminal.  For exam...

Riggings and elections

So as briefly as possible, I wish to examine the issue of rigging and elections. So, a simple example, used previously about , " do you want to stop at Dairy Queen ", and why an election or collective decision might be important, in a general way. But, assume that this occurs in an automobile, as the standard way that these things work is you have one driver at a time, for better or worse.  Now, if everybody wants to stop at Dairy Queen except the driver, there is a better than even  chance that that election has been rigged, because there is a better than 50% chance that nobody goes to Dairy Queen.  The chances are about the same whether or not the driver wants to stop at Dairy Queen. If he does, then most  likely everybody does go.  So most people would say that this election has been rigged or maybe stolen.   So elections do get rigged, probably a lot, as we can easily see, and of course there might be consequences, like, for example, nobody w...

Wokeness and the U.S. Military

So apparently spell check is a bit ambiguous about this word, but nevertheless, when you turn a verb into a noun all of a sudden and expect people to understand what that might mean, seems like you are playing with kerosene.  So as how vague or meaningful that word might be, I need to mention some aspects of my military service, 1970-1973.   During my first few months I was highly engaged with charismatic Christianity,  which is most commonly ( probably ) known as the - born again - movement.   Some people might refer to it as - refried Christianity - , nevertheless, it was neither sanctioned or encouraged, as far as I could tell by any " military " authority, or civilian oversight.  So, just comparing being -- born again -- to what ever you call or mean by  wokeness ((???)). Now, more to the point I served at the end of the Medical Corp, in the U.S. Army, directed by Mr. Richard Nixon, which I have to say I was extremely uncomfortable abou...
